It is a masterpiece that every pastoral worker should read.

FENZA Welcome to Zambia Course 2014

Welcome to Zambia 2014 course attracted eleven participants: six students of the Missionaries of Africa who are appointed to Zambia for two years of pastoral experience in parishes; two Comboni sisters who have been working in Zambia for some time; a Fidei Donum priest from Poland who has just taken up an appointment in the Catholic Diocese of Kabwe and finally a couple from the USA.

An input on intercultural communication was added to the program this year. It aims at helping the participants to mitigate the cultural shocks they might experience.

The speakers were the staff of FENZA and invited professionals or experts in topics covered. They enthusiastically came to share insights with the participants to help them deepen their knowledge and appreciate better the dynamics of life in Zambia.

Beneficiating from an active participation of the attendants, the updated insightful presentations from the speakers and the chance to encounter or interact with different people, we are glad to say that the program has been successful.

FENZA, a place to study, stay, pray and rest!

Since its establishment in 2007, FENZA (Faith and Encounter Centre Zambia) has been a resource centre on faiths and cultures in Zambia. Its library offers excellent volumes on social, cultural and religious concerns. Every year hundreds of students and researchers within and outside Zambia make use of these special documents, in the library and through online consultation. The staff of FENZA are resource people and always available to help on social, cultural and religious matters. FENZA also offers unique initiation courses on Zambian cultures and language courses in Nyanja and Bemba. Since last year, FENZA has equipped itself with a hostel of 12 self-contained rooms, which provides very good accommodation for those who want to stay at FENZA while using the library or attending a course. Moreover, with this hostel it’s now possible to have a recollection/retreat or take some time off to rest at FENZA. Now FENZA is an ideal place to study, to stay and to pray.

New Perspectives in Mission: the Challenge for New Paradigms

held its last conference of the year on Saturday 7^th December, under the theme: New Perspectives in Mission: the Challenge for New Paradigms.

Three speakers shared their understanding of Mission, in relation to the theme. Fr Lastone Robert Lupupa, SJ, currently Parish Priest at Our Heavenly Father Parish in Chelstone, spoke about how he became interested in the mass media, and how he uses them to spread the Good News in Zambia and beyond. For him, the mass and social media are a great tool to reach out to more people who thirst for the Word of God. Reverend Pastor Ezron Z. Musonda, the Principal of the Baptist Theological Seminary of Zambia, shared his experience of Evangelism prior to his teaching career. He explained that for the Baptists Bible Study Groups and the physical pastoral contact remain a fundamental way of evangelising.

As a way of synthesis, Fr. Marc Nsanzurwimo, a missiologist and member of FENZA gave an expansive academic comprehension of Mission today. He underlined the different approaches to mission that took place. He highlighted the challenges and opportunities that globalisation presents to Evangelisation. He ended his presentation by pointing out some fundamentals in evangelisation such as Justice and Peace, Reconciliation and the Care for Creation. See the PDF document.

As usual, time was given to the participants to ask questions and to react to the presentations. This prompted a good sharing of views and experiences. This conference made it clear once again, that today fast-changing world presents challenging opportunities to evangelise. Will we rise up to the challenge for new paradigms? And how? These will remain ongoing questions.

Next year, FENZA shall organise 3 conferences on pertinent issues, drawing hopefully as many even more participants.

Theme: Slaves! They are still among us!

Slavery or enslavement is not just something of the past! Today, millions of men, women and children are trapped in slavery, around the world, including in Zambia.

Yes! Around us, many of our brothers, sisters and children are victims of modern forms of slavery such as: Human Trafficking, Forced Labour, Child Labour, Early and Forced Marriage.

The victims are innumerable! The facts are shocking! But the good news is: some people are already working with the victims to stop these new forms of slavery.

There is still more to be done to fight and stop modern slavery.

Come and get the facts! Let’s us debate the issues and solutions to this human plight. Come and be part of an antislavery campaign.

The challenges of implementing Shari’ah Law in modern times – FENZA conferences

In line with its programmed series of conferences for the year 2013, FENZA organized its second conference on Saturday 22 June. The topic of the conference was: Challenges of Implementing Shari’ah Law in Modern Times. To present the theme were Dr Pamela Towela Sambo, Lecturer at UNZA in the Faculty of law, whose well-appreciated talk provided the general framework for understanding law in secular modern times. To present the Muslim self-understanding of Shari’ah law were Sheikh Twaha O. Chiwala and Sheikh Derrick Musa Zemba, Zambian graduate scholars of Medina University in Saudi Arabia, specialized in Shari’ah law and Prophetic Traditions (Hadiths), respectively. Finally, Fr. Felix J. Phiri, a scholar in Islamic studies and a former Lecturer of the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome, made a synthesis of the two preceding presentations, highlighting the challenges underlying the efforts of implementing Shari’ah law in modern times. The talks will soon be rendered available on the FENZA website, www.fenza.org .

The conference started at 14.30hrs and ended at 17.00hrs. After the three presentations, the audience, relatively smaller than usual, about 30 people, joined into the debate opened and moderated by Fr. Romaric Bationo, the new director of FENZA. The presence of Muslims in the audience was noticed and highly appreciated by the Christian participants. The debate had to be cut short due to time limit, leaving some participants still thirsty for more discussion. This conference may have opened the door for more encounters with Moslems around Lusaka

The next conference will be on Modern Slavery at a date to be later determined.

Theme: Challenges of implementing Shariah Law in Modern Times

We have invited experts in Secular Law and Islamic Law (Dr Pamela Towela Nsambo, UNZA; Dr Sheick Twaha O. Chiwala, Imam; Fr. Felix Phiri, Scholar of Islamic Studies) to trigger off the discussion.

Governing the whole of Muslim life, in all places and at all times, is the God given law, the Shariah. In today’s globalized world, Muslims have to co-exist with the awareness that there are other inhabitants of the earth who are governed by laws different from theirs. Its all-encompassing nature and some manifestations of some of its laws – generally perceived by non-Muslims as extreme and incompatible with modernity – have widely generated prejudiced fear and suspicion not only among non-Muslims but also among some liberal Muslims.

In view of helping to understand the key issues preoccupying both sides of the divide, and in line with its goals – empowering Christians in Zambia to face the challenges of contemporary and traditional cultures with openness and to encounter people of different Christian denominations, contemporary religious movements and religions – FENZA will be organizing a Conference / Discussion on the 22^nd of June, from 14.00hrs to 17.00hrs.

The theme of the conference will be: Challenges of Implementing Shariah Law in Modern Times.

It will be a threefold presentation: the first presentation by Dr Pamela Towela Nsambo, a full-time lecturer in the school of law at UNZA, will provide the general framework within which laws are generally understood in modern secular societies.

To provide a summary of the Muslim self-understanding of Shariah law will be Dr Sheikh Twaha O. Chiwala, an Islamic scholar of Shariah law, a Mufti and currently Imam of Taqwa and other mosques in Lusaka.

Finally, Fr. Felix J. Phiri, member of the FENZA team and scholar of Islamic studies, will highlight a number of ways in which the implementation of Shariah law is effectively a challenge to modern Society. The three presentations will be followed by the opening of the discussion to the audience, through questions, answers and personal contributions to the debate.
