Chilubi incident, Northern Rhodesia – March 1959

Dear Fr Udelhoven,
Two years ago (almost to the day!) you put me in touch with Fr Richard at the archives of the White Fathers in Rome. I was researching an incident that occurred on Chilubi Island in March 1959.  Fr Richards was able to send me several documents which were exactly what I needed to enable me to progress, and now finish my researches on this event.
I have sent a copy of my text to Fr Richard, and I now enclose a copy for you since you are the “man on the spot”, so to speak!
Perhaps it may find a place in your archives.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely, Neil Morris

Zambia: Geoffrey Mwamba Donates K110, 000

By Kaiko Namusa
DEFENCE Minister Geoffrey Mwamba has pledged K110, 000 towards helping the Kabwata Catholic Church women’s group to continue uplifting the living standards of vulnerable groups.
Mr Mwamba said the Kabwata Catholic Women’s League from the Good Shepherd congregation had continued in its endeavours of assisting the less privileged and had, among other projects, assisted the Saint Lawrence Home of Hope. He said the projects being embarked on by the church group required support for them to be fulfilled, hence his decision to contribute to the effort.
Mr Mwamba, who was accompanied by his wife, Chama, joined the women after attending church service for a luncheon where he pledged the financial support, saying that assisting vulnerable groups was Government’s vision. He implored the church to ensure they lived according to the call by Pope Francis to be committed to the call of charity, works and loyalty.
Mr Mwamba said days of relying on handouts by the church were gone and it was up to the church to embark on various fundraising ventures to raise money for their projects. He said with close cooperation with various stakeholders, the women’s group would efficiently and effectively implement their projects.
Parish Priest, Adelarde Munishi, assured that the funds raised from the event would be used for the intended purpose. Father Munishi said it was important for the women’s group to fulfill its objective of helping the vulnerable in society.
Note: the value of 100, 000 kwacha is about 18,500 $

Death of the mother of Belete Fanta Lemma – Ethiopia

Belete_Fanta_LemmaToday at 17 hours, from Ethiopia, Bonaventure Mashata sent us a message telling us that the mother of Father Belete Fanta Lemma has passed away 45 days after the death of his father. This is sad news indeed!

We can imagine how difficult it might be for our beloved friend Belete. Let us pray for him, for his mother and father and the entire family.

Updates, 31st August 2013

Dear confreres,

Indeed I have lost both parents in a very short period of time. I have nothing to say but to accept the reality of life and thank God for the gift of my parents. They were everything for me but now I have nothing except Jesus Christ. My father died at the end of June on the 29th at the age of 96. My mother died on the 16th of August at the age of 84 after being sick for only two days. During the funeral of my father, her beloved husband, she was praying to God to be reunited with her husband. Her prayer was fulfilled after fifty days. They were married for 68 years. I am sure that now she is happy with her husband and with the Lord.

Dear Confreres, thank you very much for your encouragement and prayer. Please continue to pray for me and my family members.

May God bless you.

Your’s Belete

Timothée Bationo at the JMJ in Brazil

Timothée BationoOur confrere Timothée Bationo, Sector Superior in Mozambique, went to pay a visit to Pierre Lukusa in Brazil. It coincided with the JMJ in Rio de Janeiro where Timothée met other Missionaries of Africa: Willy Ngumbi, Bishop of Kindu in DRCongo and Francisco J. Silota, Bishop of Chimoio in Mozambique. Note that Jan De Groef, Bishop of Bethlehem in South Africa was also at the JMJ.
Timothée was pleased to meet Pierre who will be completing his training at “Fazenda d´Esperança” for one more and final year. In his two weeks journey, Timothée participated in some events led by the Pope: visit and blessing of an hospital, visit to the slum “favela”, way of the Cross, vigil and sending mass. He also met the group of Gen Rosso-Focolari composed of about 200 youth. They performed a show with songs and plays emphasising the idea that the youth can be strong without violence. Peace, love and unity are great tools for evangelisation. The show was presented to Pope Francis during a night vigil.
In his simplicity, Pope Francis touched the hearts of more than 3 million people at the Copacabana beach. His final message is to affirm that Christians should “go without fear proclaiming the Gospel”.
Timothée will remember this exceptional experience for ever and wish to thank everyone who helped him to make this trip to Brazil possible.

JCTR urges caution on 2013 budget management

JCTR LusakaPress Release 15thAugust 2013
On Sunday 11 August, 2013, the Minister of Finance Honourable Alexander Chikwanda, held a briefing on fiscal and other treasury matters. The briefing was partly in response to various concerns bordering on the performance of the 2013 budget thus far.
Different sections of society have expressed fears suggesting a looming or actual budget deficit beyond the 2013 budget provision of 4.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “While the government made assurances that the perceived budget deficit is within manageable limits, it is important that the government is seen to manage the deficit in ways that do not worsen the livelihoods of the majority poor’’, notes Daniel Mutale, Social Conditions programme manager. Zambia: Catholics Deny Patriotic Front Link

Zambia ReportsBy Peter Adamu, 13 August 2013
The Catholic Church says the perception that they are Patriotic Front inclined is untrue and that they will continue speaking for the voiceless.
Zambia Episcopal Conference spokesperson Father Paul Samasumo said the fact that some members of the Catholic Church were PF inclined did not mean that it was the position of the church.
“The ZEC has noted with concern that in recent weeks, there have been accusations and attacks alleging that the Catholic Church in Zambia has abandoned its role of speaking for the voiceless, the poor and marginalised on the wrong public perception that the Church is loyal to or favours the Patriotic Front and its leadership,” said Samasumo in a statement.
“The Catholic Church in Zambia, as elsewhere in the world, is made up of members that belong to diverse political party affiliations. Therefore, ZEC, in its official capacity, does not and cannot champion any single political candidate even if that candidate were a faithful son of the Church.”
He said, “In this regard, any hint of partisan politics by a priest or a Bishop through the media or from the pulpit is wrong. It is wrong because the God whom we preach about and serve welcomes everyone in spite of political affiliations.”

During his campaign for the presidency PF leader Michael Sata played the Catholic card as he is a member and some priests openly rendered their support to him but with the PF falling short of expectations the Catholic church has been conspicuously missing raising concern among the neutrals.

Proflight eyes 3 more destinations

Zambia Daily Mail – August 14, 2013
By KELLY NJOMBO
PROFLIGHT Zambia has unveiled plans for three additional international destinations to its growing schedule by mid-2014, making Lusaka a regional hub for air travel. Company director of government and industry affairs Philip Lemba said the airline has plans to start flying to Lubumbashi, from Ndola, with connections between Ndola and Lusaka. Mr Lemba said the airline is also considering services to Harare, Dar es Salaam, Mozambiques’sTete town and Johannesburg, subject to regulatory approval.
“We believe that after years of prudent [and] steady growth, Proflight Zambia has now built a solid base to reach a critical mass from which it can expand into regional markets, heeding the requests of our customers.
Proflight-Boeing“Lusaka is a natural choice as a hub, and Proflight is determined to be a standard bearer for Zambian aviation throughout the region,” he said.
Mr Lemba said in a statement in Lusaka recently. He said with the introduction of the Malawi route, Proflight currently operates 10 scheduled routes using nine aircraft, and a 105-seat Boeing 737 aircraft which was just added to the Proflight fleet as the airline’s first jet aircraft.
Mr Lemba said the airline is keen to introduce flights to Johannesburg from Lusaka and is examining the option of flying into South Africa city’s smaller airport, Lanseria, whose costs are lower than that of the city’s main OR Tambo (ORT) International Airport. Mr Lemba, however, said the airline has appealed for input from travellers to help it identify how best the new services can be structured.
