Vocation team in Lumimba, Zambia

A vocation team from Directors of various congregations of diocesan and missionary groups visited Lumimba in June 2013. They met students in Lumimba Day Secondary school. It was a great opportunity to see each congregation touching the lives of our youth. Following its presentation, the vocation team encounter with some interested students. The team left after lunch. We were particularly happy to welcome Fr Francis Kangwa, our Vocation Director. In one of the attached photos you can see Francis with some of the students interested in joining us. Please Francis! Come back again. Our mission is to touch all the corners of the earth so that people may experience life, life in its fullness; Jn 10:10.

The challenges of implementing Shari’ah Law in modern times – FENZA conferences

In line with its programmed series of conferences for the year 2013, FENZA organized its second conference on Saturday 22 June. The topic of the conference was: Challenges of Implementing Shari’ah Law in Modern Times. To present the theme were Dr Pamela Towela Sambo, Lecturer at UNZA in the Faculty of law, whose well-appreciated talk provided the general framework for understanding law in secular modern times. To present the Muslim self-understanding of Shari’ah law were Sheikh Twaha O. Chiwala and Sheikh Derrick Musa Zemba, Zambian graduate scholars of Medina University in Saudi Arabia, specialized in Shari’ah law and Prophetic Traditions (Hadiths), respectively. Finally, Fr. Felix J. Phiri, a scholar in Islamic studies and a former Lecturer of the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome, made a synthesis of the two preceding presentations, highlighting the challenges underlying the efforts of implementing Shari’ah law in modern times. The talks will soon be rendered available on the FENZA website, www.fenza.org .

The conference started at 14.30hrs and ended at 17.00hrs. After the three presentations, the audience, relatively smaller than usual, about 30 people, joined into the debate opened and moderated by Fr. Romaric Bationo, the new director of FENZA. The presence of Muslims in the audience was noticed and highly appreciated by the Christian participants. The debate had to be cut short due to time limit, leaving some participants still thirsty for more discussion. This conference may have opened the door for more encounters with Moslems around Lusaka

The next conference will be on Modern Slavery at a date to be later determined.

Zambia: Bring Black Friday Attackers to Justice – Catholics

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has condemned last Friday’s attack on the church during a Black Friday procession to protest the Patriotic Front’s poor governance record and removal of subsidies on maize and fuel calling on government to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a statement by JCTR’s Faith and Justice programme manager Brian Banda, the Catholics are demanding assurance on the promotion of a society where human dignity, which is the bedrock of human rights and democracy, is respected, promoted and protected in Zambia.

I received the sad news this morning that one of my brothers, third born called Lazarus, passed away on Friday 7^th around 08:30am in Lusaka. Burial is on Monday 10^th June, 2013.

Pray for him and the family left behind. Stay blessed.

Theme: Challenges of implementing Shariah Law in Modern Times

We have invited experts in Secular Law and Islamic Law (Dr Pamela Towela Nsambo, UNZA; Dr Sheick Twaha O. Chiwala, Imam; Fr. Felix Phiri, Scholar of Islamic Studies) to trigger off the discussion.

Governing the whole of Muslim life, in all places and at all times, is the God given law, the Shariah. In today’s globalized world, Muslims have to co-exist with the awareness that there are other inhabitants of the earth who are governed by laws different from theirs. Its all-encompassing nature and some manifestations of some of its laws – generally perceived by non-Muslims as extreme and incompatible with modernity – have widely generated prejudiced fear and suspicion not only among non-Muslims but also among some liberal Muslims.

In view of helping to understand the key issues preoccupying both sides of the divide, and in line with its goals – empowering Christians in Zambia to face the challenges of contemporary and traditional cultures with openness and to encounter people of different Christian denominations, contemporary religious movements and religions – FENZA will be organizing a Conference / Discussion on the 22^nd of June, from 14.00hrs to 17.00hrs.

The theme of the conference will be: Challenges of Implementing Shariah Law in Modern Times.

It will be a threefold presentation: the first presentation by Dr Pamela Towela Nsambo, a full-time lecturer in the school of law at UNZA, will provide the general framework within which laws are generally understood in modern secular societies.

To provide a summary of the Muslim self-understanding of Shariah law will be Dr Sheikh Twaha O. Chiwala, an Islamic scholar of Shariah law, a Mufti and currently Imam of Taqwa and other mosques in Lusaka.

Finally, Fr. Felix J. Phiri, member of the FENZA team and scholar of Islamic studies, will highlight a number of ways in which the implementation of Shariah law is effectively a challenge to modern Society. The three presentations will be followed by the opening of the discussion to the audience, through questions, answers and personal contributions to the debate.

Condolences to the Munishi and Chama families

I have just received two pieces of sad news.

The brother-in-law of Fr. Adelarde Munishi, Mr. James Massawe passed away yesterday night, Monday 1^stJune 2013 in Tanzania

The uncle of Fr. Evans Chama, elder brother of his mother, Mr. Donald Kashiwa, passed away last night, 2^nd June, in Kafue, Zambia. Tomorrow the family members including Evans will travel to Kafue.

May the two rest in perfect peace and may the good Lord bring consolation to the families.

Let us remember them in our prayers.

The Oasis Forum and its constituent members are appalled and shocked by the behaviour of Patriotic Front (PF) cadres who attacked a peaceful gathering of several civil society organisations, yesterday, 31 May 2013, inside the Church of the Bible Gospel Outreach Church in Africa (BIGOCA) situated in Matero Township, Lusaka. The consortium of civil society, exercising their rights, was gathered to pray and peacefully protest Government’s removal of subsidies on Maize meal, agriculture and fuel. READ MORE

Ce retour en Zambie restera certainement un grand moment dans ma vie de missionnaire d’Afrique. Le contact avec les gens de Twatasha et de Kabwata va renforcer ma conviction que ce ne sont pas les possessions matérielles qui donnent de la valeur à une personne, mais un cœur capable d’accueillir afin d’aimer. Mes confrères m’ont apporté beaucoup, car ils m’ont accueilli très fraternellement. J’ai été impressionné par leur joie et leur optimisme malgré les défis qu’ils rencontrent.

De retour au Canada, suite à une nomination, je considère que ma dernière expérience de quelques mois en Afrique fut une expérience énergisante qui m’aidera dans les années à venir. LIRE LA SUITE

Encounter with elephants in Lumimba

I wanted to go to Chipuka Gate, inside Luambe National Park, to check if the road was passable. Two students from Lumimba Day Secondary School were with me. I decided to reach the first bridge and check if the water had dried out. There were only a few rough places due to hippos and elephants.

Before reaching the first river bed, moving slowly, I was admiring some antelopes, beautiful birds and baboons while appreciating the beauty of God’s creation. We were moving closer to the Luangwa River and we could see some animals drinking and hippos making gymnastics in the waters. Suddenly, I heard the boys screaming. I looked on my left side and I saw a huge elephant charging towards the car. Then, I look on my right side and saw three elephants approaching very fast towards us. We were surrounded on both sides. Confused, I had to act quickly. I wanted to switch off the car engine. The boys told me immediately not to do so as the elephants were coming with sharp loud noise. When reaching my door side, the boys urged me to move. I immediately engaged the gear on a rough road full of potholes. I speeded up and managed to move 10km per hours. The elephants were relentless and approaching fearlessly. Providentially, they started slowing down. I was terribly scared. It was actually the first time since I came to Lumimba to encounter elephants at such a closer range. Luckily, the first elephant on the left side stopped chasing us and the others eventually stopped too. But still, I couldn’t drive very fast. I was just jumping up and down. I never looked behind or in the mirror.

Few minutes later, we reached the bridge and found that the Ministry of Health have put logs nicely and cars were passing without problems. I remained scared, checking all sides of the road till Chipuka Gate. Surely my blood pressure and adrenaline might have gone high. Once more, my experience in Lumimba has been marked by an exciting experience! For sure, we must have come at a wrong time even though it was in the middle of the day. I can still see their huge ears and hear their terrific noise.

I am still under shock when writing my story. I am thankful to the students who saw the elephants in good time. This has been an exclusive experience and shall be archived in Lumimba Diary. Funny enough, I am looking forward going back to Chasera next week, using the same route. Wow! God save us!
