There were about 50 people; the biggest attendance they ever had! A proof that modern slavery<\/i> <i>is a very hot topic! It had been organised by the <a title=\"Oikos\" href=\"http:\/\/mafrsouthernafrica.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/cedara-theological-institute_invitation-for-public-lecture.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OIKOS group<\/a>, of which Antony Alckias is the Secretary. He is one of our students who should be ordained deacon in December.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><i>As I was speaking to philosophy &amp; theology students and teachers, I started with a quick overview of <a title=\"Attitude of the Church towards Slavery\" href=\"http:\/\/mafrsouthernafrica.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/public-lecture-handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the attitude of the Church towards slavery through the ages<\/a> followed by a brief history of Lavigerie&#8217;s antislavery campaign.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><i>The big question is: what is the Church doing? The Counter Trafficking In Persons (CTIP) Office at the <a title=\"Bishops Conference SACBC\" href=\"http:\/\/mafrsouthernafrica.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/response-human-trafficking-aug-2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bishops&#8217; Conference (SACBC)<\/a> published all kinds of posters &amp; flyers to bring more consciousness. They had <a title=\"Seminar Human Trafficking\" href=\"http:\/\/mafrsaprovince.com\/2013\/04\/19\/human-trafficking-conference-in-south-africa-april-9-12-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 3 day seminar in April<\/a> and started a Truck Drivers&#8217; Anti-Trafficking group. They will soon publish a small book &#8220;The Church and Anti-Trafficking&#8221;.
